John Dowell is a wealthy American. He spends the summer months with his wife in a holiday resort in Germany, together with the respectable and aristocratic Ashburnhams. One day, when the truth about his wife and close friends comes to light, Dowell's world suddenly collapses. Dowell, who painfully experienced the destructive emotions hidden behind the civilized attitudes of the upper classes, and most importantly, betrayal, only finds solace in telling his story to a silent audience: "Who on earth can recognize someone else's heart, even their own?.."
