Food and Drink in the Past Days of Istanbul Book Description Sermet Muhtar Alus is an author who has always told his readers about the life of a city, generally between the late 19th century and the early 20th century, with more than a thousand articles he wrote; The author of "old Istanbul", as he often calls it. He is a writer who earned his living by telling the pleasantries and oddities of the not-so-old "old times" to several generations of readers who experienced first the Constitutional Monarchy and then the Republic not just as regime changes but as major transformations in social life. We start our tour by visiting places in Istanbul such as restaurants, taverns, recreation areas and pastry shops, with the extremely entertaining guidance of Alus in these articles, most of which have been published as a book for the first time. After visiting Muslims' iftar and holiday tables and Christian fairs, we listen to people's stories on the street. After meat and fish dishes, we wander into the orchards and orchards and read "monographies" full of delightful details about dozens of vegetables and fruits, from lettuce to leeks, from grapes to oranges. We see, with a heavy heart, that Istanbul is a self-sufficient city thanks to these orchards and gardens. After tasting the desserts and nuts accompanied by this talented storyteller, who explains the recreation culture around the waters of the city from Karakulak to Hamidiye, we end our tour by enjoying the treats such as raki, wine, beer, tea, coffee and hookah in the past days of Istanbul. We remember our admiration for the richness of Alus' language, his extraordinary ear memory, and his ability to remember the daily speaking and thinking styles of almost everyone with incredible detail and convey them with a mischievous sense of humor. In his introduction to the book, Erdir Zat draws attention to important points based on the lines of Alusun's beautiful writings. (From the Promotional Bulletin)
