In 1964, the Greeks of Istanbul experienced a great disaster. They were forced to leave their homes and were exiled to a world they did not know. The traumas and difficulties experienced in this tragic event, such as being granted foreign status, leaving the country with a suitcase, and all of their legally protected rights suddenly slipping away, have been the subject of several studies and films to date. Greeks of Istanbul and the Exiles of 1964 leaves the floor to the addressees of this pain to examine the issue in depth. The book reveals what led to this exile, how the exile took place, how this issue was covered in the press, and what those who had to establish a new life experienced, through historical documents and testimonies. It traces this tragedy by including personal stories as well as theoretical discussions such as minority law and the nation-state principle.

“Writing the history of a human community in its own words is important to understand the human experiences among the touchstones of that history. For this to happen, it is necessary to leave the word to those who lived that history. Today, our aim with this book is to bring to light the efforts of the Greeks of Istanbul to shed light on the history of 1964. It carries the expectation that those who create storms with a word will sometimes remain silent and listen to those who have something to say.”

- İlay Romain Örs
