Istanbul Train
Istanbul Train is the work in which Graham Greene, one of the most read English writers of the 20th century, started to find his identity as a novelist. At the same time, it is like a thriller novel with its flowing plot, and it is actually the first of his novels that attracts attention with its deeper moral foundation. Loyalty, one's duties to oneself and others, and devotion to one's country are among the main themes of Greene's novel, in which he ponders racism and communism. The novel tells the story of a group of people who set out on a train journey from Ostend to Istanbul. Each of these passengers contradicts the accepted social values in the world of the 1930s: a Jew traveling through anti-Semitic Europe, a communist revolutionary, a thief and murderer who boasted that he had never been caught, an alcoholic whose sexual orientation could not be approved at that time. A female journalist and a revue girl who had little share of beauty in an age where beauty determined the value of women. The fates of these people who board the train for different purposes will be intertwined throughout the journey.
