Istanbul Open City - Exposing the Concerns of Urban Modernity Book Description Urban theory traditionally attributes modernity to the city, the historical emergence of certain forms of subjectivity, and the rise of significant developments in culture, art, and architecture. This is generally considered to be the result of technological, economic and social transformations in the major metropolises of Europe and America in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In contrast, in the modern period, non-Western cities are often viewed through the lens of Westernization and development. How should we understand urban modernity in these “other” cities? Istanbul Open City aims to highlight cultural creativity by examining how Istanbulites define themselves as they discuss, imagine, build and consume their city. Focusing on print media and photographs, films, architectural heritage exhibitions and theme parks, the book explores the connections between these popular depictions through common representational practices.
