This work by Gorky is the second part of the author's famous autobiographical trilogy, consisting of My Childhood, Among People and My Universities. This book, previously published in Turkish as While I was Earning My Bread, has been translated as Among People, remaining true to its original title.

Describing all aspects of Russia's social life based on his own life, Gorky describes in this book the period when he left his relatives and started working among foreign people. The tense atmosphere, human types, daily life and history of Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century are depicted in an extremely simple language, through the eyes of a child entering his youth. At the time of its publication, a critic praised the work as follows: "This book, which is read in an absorbing way, is written with such surprising simplicity that it can only be explained with Maxim Gorky's unique sincerity." One of his contemporaries wrote the following in his letter to the author: "I can't put my novel down... Especially the portrayal of women is very deeply affecting. There is only one thing we should not forget in this cruel age, and that is, if we have not turned into mechanical animals, we owe it to our women's ability to preserve life. You see this very much." "You explained it beautifully, elegantly and deeply."

The work, which was adapted to the cinema by Mark Donskoy in 1938, is one of the greatest classics about the emotional education of human relations.
