An Inquiry into Human Understanding
David Hume (1711-1776): Scottish philosopher and historian. Although he studied law at the University of Edinburgh, where he enrolled at the age of 12, he abandoned his education because he was fascinated by philosophy. His first work, Treatise of Human Nature, was published in 1739-1740. Although the first version of his famous investigations, Philosophical Essays Concerning Human Understanding, was published in 1748, it did not attract much attention. The six-volume History of England, which he started writing while he was a library director, brought him much more success and fame than his philosophical works. He also influenced liberal economists, especially his close friend Adam Smith, with his essays on economics. David Hume influenced many philosophers after him, especially Kant, with his philosophy based on Locke's empiricism and Berkeley's idealism. An Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding is the most competent work of the period, in which Hume provides a sharp and clear summary of the subjects he examined in his first work and formulates his most famous arguments, from the origin of ideas to free will, from doubts about the principle of causality to miracles.
