From Where It Is Examined
Aslı Biçen tells us a semi-fantasy story set in an imaginary provincial town that could well be called "an island if it didn't have that tenuous connection to the land." The story develops around Cemal, a grocer who has been searching for his missing father all over Turkey for twenty years and is preparing to marry his childhood love Saliha, and Jülide, a high school student who lives with her grandmother because her parents were killed in an accident years ago and who has a tense relationship with her amateur football lover Erkan. Although Jülide has extraordinary abilities that allow her to control "things" from time to time and Cemal has unusual human sensitivities, there is a basic personality trait that unites them: their weaknesses and powerlessness against all kinds of pressure.
The oppressive environment that we are familiar with but somehow "goes away" here, the atmosphere of insularity and lack of freedom are told through these two characters in the novel. In this increasingly intense atmosphere, both of them have to struggle almost against their will to survive: "If everything consists of strength, defeat is inevitable. Weakness must also have a rule."
We hope that this book, which starts like a provincial story and at some point turns into a fantastic political novel, will get the attention it deserves with its successful plot as well as the rarely seen beauty of its language.
