Faith of the Unbelievers
The return of religion has become one of the dominant themes of contemporary philosophy, perhaps the first, but philosophy offers us little more than an exaggerated echo of a political reality dominated by a religious war. The secular era seems to have somehow given way to a new era in which political action is directly the product of metaphysical conflict. Here Critchley's book asks "Should we defend some form of secularism, or should we calmly accept the return to theism - or is there a third way?" In order to answer the question, it deals with the issues of faith, love, religion and violence in depth.
Critchley moves from the politics-religion paradox in Rousseau to the return of St. Paul in Heidegger, Taubes, Agamben and Badiou, and from there to the politics-original sin relationship in the works of Carl Schmitt and John Gray and the implicit mystical tradition of anarchism. It examines whether faith is possible for non-believers. In the last chapter, he expands on his discussion with Slavoj Zizek and addresses the issue of violence and the limits of nonviolence.
