Peter Lerch was one of the first Russian scientists to conduct scientific studies in the field of Kurdology in the 19th century and to have these studies published. Peter Lerch worked at the Department of History and Philology at the Royal Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg in the 1850s.

Peter Lrech lived for 11 weeks with Kurdish prisoners of war who were placed in Roslow in the spring of 1856, on the assignment given by the Academy. During his stay here, he received information from the Kurds here about the social structure and sociology of Kurdistan of that period and collected Kurdish (Kurmanci and Kırdki) folkloric texts here. 

Peter Lrech presents a report on his work at Roslow to the Department of History-Linguistics of the Royal Academy of Sciences, which he later writes in .,“Forschungen über die Kurden und die Iranischen Nordchaldier (Studies on the Kurds and Iranian Northern Chaldeans), Band I, II St. Petersburg, 1857, (New Edition: Amsterdam 1979).

Researcher and writer Seyîdxan Kurij made a special research on Peter Lerch's kurdology studies. Seyîdxan based this study on the German edition of Peter Lerch's book.
