MAN BOOKER FINALIST GOLDSMITHS PRIZE
COSTA NOVEL AWARD A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: NPR, FINANCIAL TIMES
“We are just eyes looking for the edges that are not broken or broken
that can fit together.”
Two lovers and the story of injustice in a text where time is timeless, form is playful, knowing is mysterious and fiction is real they become entwined. One half of the novel is told in the voice of George, a 68-year-old who was shaken by the death of his mother, and the other half is told in the voice of the Renaissance painter Del Cossa. It is up to the reader's luck which character he will meet first!
Smith challenges the idea that a novel should proceed with a conventional plot or characters whose identities are defined by sharp boundaries. Going back and forth between the past and the future, Two at a Time captures the artistry in the way we perceive time and explores how art can transform those who encounter it and those who make it. In the novel, where "surveillance" in the broadest sense is one of the main themes, seeing and being seen radically changes the lives of the characters. It points to the possibility of humans being both. Ali Smith once again expands the boundaries of the novel with great mastery and creativity.
