A Tale of Two Cities
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the age of faith, it was the age of unbelief, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair; everything was before us, there was nothing before us; Either we were all going directly to heaven or vice versa... In short, the era was so similar to the current era that the leaders of the era insisted on making comparisons between "good" and "bad" only in degrees of superiority.

His depressing, depressing novels such as Hard Times (1854) or Little Dorrit (1857) were not what was expected from him. Dickens was in a pathetic situation in the mid-fifties. His readers abandoned him just when he should have been competing with such greats as Thackeray and George Eliot. He had to make a brand new breakthrough, and the name of this innovation was a historical novel: The Tale of Two Cities...
