A Tale of Two Cities
A Tale of Two Cities, one of Charles Dickens' two historical novels, was written in 1859, twenty years after the French revolution. A Tale of Two Cities develops around the events experienced by a group of characters in London and Paris before and after the French Revolution. It begins on a cold November evening in 1775, and is followed by Dr. We meet Manette and his daughter Lucie. Just as they were about to live a peaceful life, the French Revolution broke out. In 1792, those who once died are now killing, and Paris is experiencing a period of terror.
A novel of opposites, darkness and light, violence and hope, death and resurrection, courage and sacrifice, A Tale of Two Cities is, in the words of Charles Dickens, "the best story I have written".
“The face of Charles Dickens is the face of a man who is always at war. He does not fight, he is not afraid, he has a generous temper, in short, he is a nineteenth-century liberal, a free mind, a type hated by all the stinking little conservative people who are now vying for our souls.”
