II. Richard
II. Among Richard Shakespeare's historical plays about the civil wars in England, it is one of the most loved and frequently performed works, both in terms of its poetry and the rich opportunities it provides for the characters. As in his other historical plays, Shakespeare benefited from Holingshed's chronicles in this play and exhibited the turmoil of the transition period with the contradictions between the medieval concept of kingship and the political realism of the New Age. The hero of the game is King II. Richard has adopted the traditional and glorified understanding of kingship so much, and he has become so dizzy with the issue that he believes to be sacred, that he has found himself in a situation where he cannot cope with the concrete realities and complex problems of his country. When his cousin Bolinbroke, whom he had exiled because he could not be a successful man of action, returned and demanded the return of his unjustly confiscated lands, he gave his uncle his crown along with his lands, in response to the great support Bolingbroke received from other nobles, and became a self-pitying player. II. As a character who enjoys playing games, Richard can in a way be thought of as a precursor to Hamlet. However, while Hamlet's actions are guided by his thoughts and the words he uses, Richard's actions are under the control of his words. Even though Shakespeare used his eloquence unlimitedly through the characters in this play, he manages to present a complete interpretation of human nature and historical facts.
