Thought, law and politics each address different categories. However, these three areas are interrelated and the person or persons who are interested in one of them must also consider the other two areas.
When İsmail Beşikci started to research the Kurdish/Kurdistan issue in the academic field since the 1960s, he attracted a lot of attention because he criticized and questioned the official ideology's perception that "everyone is Turkish, everyone is Muslim".
Instead of İsmail Beşikci's ideas being criticized by the Turkish academy, he was removed from the academic field and thrown into prison. İsmail Beşikci found himself in a legal struggle out of necessity. However, as he encountered an unlawful justice in Turkey, he defended his ideas more and more in the courts where he was tried!
The colonialist, genocidal, fascist military bureaucratic nature of the system, or in Ismail Beşikci’s words, the “official Turkish ideology”, subjected it to violence and attempted to rot in prisons. However, when Ismail Beşikci was deprived of the opportunity to present his ideas in the academic field, he turned the courts into a platform for discussion as an exemplary intellectual, scientist and thinker. He paid this price heavily with his life and body spent in prison. However, he emerged not only in Turkey and Kurdistan, but also in the world as a portrait of an intellectual like Jan Poul Sartre and Frances Fanon. The issue that Ismail Beşikci touched upon was the existence of Kurds/Kurdistan and other nations that suffered genocide. The conditions in Kurdistan were many times more severe than Algeria. Turkey was making intellectuals and scientists experience more difficult conditions than France. Under these conditions, Ismail Beşikci was trying to realize himself as an intellectual and scientist and share his thoughts with the public.
Because, as a Turk and a scientist, İsmail Beşikci empathized not with the Turkish state and the perception and stance that this state reflects on the people of Turkey, but with the conscience, voice, memory, perception and life of the peoples such as Kurds, Armenians, Assyrians, etc. who were subjected to genocide, whose existence was denied, and who were oppressed because of their affiliation, and he demonstrated the power of thought with his sociological analyses.
While doing this, he was faced with an unlawful trial, execution and refutation. However, İsmail Beşikci, in the face of this situation, did not worry about whether he would be punished or not, but he cared about science and the meticulousness of analyzing the facts correctly with the scientific method, and he acted with this concern.
We see İsmail Beşikci's clear stance in his defenses against the "Indictments", "Reasoned Decisions" and "Police Interrogations" in this book.
The lived experience of the saying “Justice without law is not justice!” strikes our minds and perceptions once again in this book. It is important to see and know the value of what was experienced, what was done, what was asked and what was defended as it is, and to discuss its historical value.
