Our previous publication, Hard to Find Good People by Flannery O'Connor, was very popular. Now, we are including the author's second story book, published after his death, in Metis Literature: There are nine beautiful stories in Every Upset Has a Downhill. All of the characters are obsessive types with more than their share of human weaknesses: Some are people who are concerned about being virtuous, some are concerned about "saving" others by doing good, some are concerned about keeping up with change and progress, and some are people who are concerned about social problems such as racism or are obsessed with death. As O'Connor depicts the situations these characters find themselves in, he adds plenty of irony, a lot of tension, a little tragedy, and a pinch of comedy to the narrative cauldron. Thus, yes, quite dark, but enjoyable to read stories emerge.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: He was born in 1925 in Georgia, USA. He was accepted into the Iowa Writing Workshop in 1946. After being diagnosed with lupus tuberculosis in 1951, he returned to his family farm in Georgia and spent the rest of his life there. A devout Catholic, O'Connor read books on Catholic theology and gave lectures on faith and literature from time to time while he lived on the farm. The stories he wrote during the thirteen years he struggled with his illness were collected in two books. O'Connor, who wrote two novels, Wise Blood (1952) and The Violent Bear It Away (1960), in addition to his short stories, died in 1964 as a result of the progression of his disease.
