Heidegger's reading of Nietzsche is one of the most profound and enigmatic encounters of the last century. On the occasion of this encounter, Heidegger responds to the last link of Western metaphysics and shows the limit it has reached, and he takes on the anxiety of Nietzsche, who reveals the destructive effects of European nihilism, and accompanies him, albeit from a certain distance. While this tension of distance and closeness deepens Heidegger's reading of Nietzsche, it also imprisons him within his own circle of thinking. Nietzsche sees Heidegger as a subverting philosopher and at the same time as a teacher who teaches us how to think and what it means to think. Although Nietzsche appears to Heidegger as a metaphysician who should be avoided due to his being stuck in the Western tradition of thought, he is ultimately a mountain to be overcome. Therefore, Heidegger followed an originally Nietzschean path, not to climb to the top of Nietzsche's mountain, but to navigate his own steep cliffs. Heidegger's reading of Nietzsche is a reckoning rather than an "interpretation" in the narrow sense, a dialogue or discussion with the "hermit-spirited" friend on the opposite side of a gulf separating the two peaks. Although Heidegger used this Nietzschean path in many ways to pass by the abyss of Western metaphysics that blocked his path, he claims that in the end he turned his steps to another point. But has he really been able to chart a new path for thought? Focusing on one of the important encounters in the history of philosophy, this book reveals Heidegger's placement or referral of Nietzsche in his own thought. At this point, Heidegger's appropriation of Nietzsche offers an opportunity for us to understand the transformations his own thought went through in many intellectual paths, from art to politics, from ethics to history.
