Proust begins to remember...
This work, consisting of short narratives and poems written by Marcel Proust in his 20s, is, in a way, a precursor to In Search of Lost Time.
The guests, whose mental habits had been shaken, turned sullen when Honoré's handsome tablemate, with the imprudence of youth, attempted to hint that there might be more thought in Heredia's works than is usually stated. But when Mme Fremer immediately exclaimed, "On the contrary, they are admirable carved agates, magnificent enamels, flawless examples of jewellery", joyful and satisfied expressions appeared on all faces again. The controversy regarding the anarchists was more serious. But Mme. Fremer said slowly, with resignation, as if she were submitting to the inevitability of a law of nature, "What is the use of all this? There will always be rich and poor." And when all the guests, the poorest of whom had at least a hundred thousand francs worth of rent, came face to face with this reality, they got rid of their remorse and downed their last champagne glasses with heartfelt joy...
