Animal Theory-A Critical Introduction
In Animal Theory, Derek Ryan examines “animal” and “animalism” in the light of theoretical debates. In doing so, from Friedrich Nietzsche's materialist ontology to Donna Haraway's feminist philosophy; From the psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan to the moral philosophy of Peter Singer, Tom Regan and Martha Nussbaum; From the phenomenology of Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty to the poststructuralist philosophy of Derrida, Deleuze and Félix Guattari; It follows an interdisciplinary method ranging from Carol Adams's vegetarian theory to Cary Wolfe and Rosi Braidotti's posthumanism, and traces the animal theory in the academy.
While dealing with these interdisciplinary discussions, how we think of animals "as" people, how we do not confront this when we see it in the zoo or on our plate, and the reasons why we do not confront it; However, in addition to discussing our relationships with the animals in our homes, it also raises important questions about our lack of vision of what is "non-human-centered" and, in fact, our perspective on "ourselves".
“Thinking and reading about animals is also thinking and reading about ourselves. Rather than distancing us from our embodied and emotional relationship with other animals, thinking and reading as animals serves as a more sensitive, magnanimous, and humble way of living as a species among—not above—many.”
