Miracles of Life-Modern Classics 144
The Miracles of Life, published by Zweig when he was 23, reveals his interest in history even then. The story takes place in Antwerp in the 16th century and tells the story of the friendship between a young Jewish girl and an old Christian painter whose paths intersect by chance. The background of the story is the Dutch rebellion against Spanish rule. A Jewish girl named Esther, who was the target of Christian violence as a child and was saved by a good-hearted soldier, models a religious painting to be hung in a Catholic church. The "unexpected encounter" motif that accompanies themes such as the meaning of life and religion, art and the artist's act of creation, and the atmosphere of Antwerp depicted with historical details are the precursors of Zweig's later works.
