Memoirs of the Imaginary Sotiris Spatharis
Memoirs of the imaginary Sotiris Spatharis covers the period from the childhood years of a "Karagiozis" master from "the other side of the water" to his abandonment of fantasy, that is, between 1909 and 1947. This period is also the brightest years of Karagiozis art in Greece, which developed based on Karagöz.
Karagiozis has many similarities with Karagöz in terms of both repertoire, sense of humor and the relationship between the imagination and the audience. But thanks to these memories, which allow us to see their differences, we can see which social classes Karagiozis appealed to, his relationship with the dominant culture and state ideology, and which segments of society he was embraced by. Spatharis, who followed the master dreamers in Karagiozis' golden age, became their stooges, acted together, and subsequently trained many new dreams, offers a reliable and invaluable source about the history of shadow theater from the point of view of a dreamer. In Spatharis' memoirs, he is not an outside observer, but a spokesman for the Karagiozis show.
