(From the Promotional Bulletin)
January 23, 1913... After the Sublime Porte Raid, which consolidated the power of the Committee of Union and Progress, the new grand vizier appoints Cemal Pasha as the Istanbul Guard to ensure the security of the capital.
Cemal Pasha started his memoirs, which he wrote in 1919, from this moment when he became directly influential in the "public politics of the country".
While the memoirs provide clues about the delicate balances between the three great pashas who ruled the empire, they tell first-hand many historical events in which Cemal Pasha was the leading actor:
Alliance efforts with the French and Germans, the birth of the idea of population exchange, the entry into World War I, the defense of Gaza, the Arab revolt, the occupation of Syria and Palestine...
Cemal Pasha (1872-1922) graduated from the Military Academy in 1895 and joined the army. In 1899, he laid the foundations of the Committee of Union and Progress in Thessaloniki, together with the future Talat Pasha. He joined the Committee of Union and Progress that went to Istanbul during the declaration of the Constitutional Monarchy. He became governor of Adana in 1909. He served on the front lines in the Balkan War. In the Committee of Union and Progress government established in 1913, he first became the Istanbul Guard and then the Minister of Public Works and the Navy. His attempts for an Ottoman-French alliance were unsuccessful. He was assigned to the region to ensure the security of Syria and Palestine during World War I. The Canal Operations organized for the invasion of Egypt under his command were unsuccessful. He was dismissed after the region was occupied by the British and French. After the Armistice of Mudros, he left the country with his government and party friends. He went to Afghanistan via Germany to support the fight against the British. He went to Tbilisi after the balance in the region changed. While trying to pass to Anatolia, he lost his life in an assassination attempt by two Armenian committee members on July 21, 1922; He was buried in Karskapısı Martyrdom in Erzurum.
