Hypochondriac
Molière [Jean-Baptiste Poquelin] (1622-1673): He took Latin and Greek language and literature courses at Clermont College. He studied law and left the bar, to which he was admitted, in 1641. He devoted his time and genius to theatre. He wrote, directed and took part in theater plays until his death, that is, for thirty years. He managed to create a tradition that allows him to be considered the founder of classical French comedy. This play, first performed at the Palais-Royal in 1673, is the last comedy written by Molière. It deals with themes such as medical education and medicine, which were previously covered by medieval theater and commedia dell'arte, and criticizes these two institutions mercilessly. He also played the hypochondriac Argan in the first performances of the play. Towards the end of one of these performances, he collapsed on stage and died a short time later. The Disease Patient with its full text, including prologues and interludes, is in the Hasan Âli Yücel Classics Series.
