Farmer Giles of Ham - Hardcover
Back Cover Text (From the Promotional Bulletin)
JRR Tolkien's classic children's story, published between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Farmer Giles of Ham did not look like a hero. He had a big belly, a red beard, and preferred a quiet, comfortable life. But when he unknowingly scared away a relatively deaf and myopic giant, Farmer Giles' fame spread throughout the land. Unfortunately, when the cunning dragon Chrysoplax becomes a plague on the kingdom, Farmer Giles is called to fight him.
Like The Hobbit and Roverandom, Farmer Giles of Ham was invented by JRR Tolkien, initially to entertain his children, but became more elaborate as the story expanded. The final version appeals to all readers who love cleverly told, imaginative stories.
“A magnificent tale set in the times when giants and dragons roamed the kingdom.”

This edition includes the full text, first published in 1949, and original illustrations by Pauline Baynes, which Tolkien said were the most appropriate choice for his story. It also contains the first written draft of the story and Tolkien's notes for a sequel.
