The People Want
“The people want…”: This part of the slogan repeated by Arab protesters since 2011 revealed a long-suppressed hunger for democracy. On the other hand, the protesters were also expressing major social and economic problems. Although Islamist parties did not initiate the protest movement, they benefited most from the power vacuum that followed the overthrow of rulers in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen.
Gilbert Achcar, one of the first thinkers and activists that comes to mind when the Arab world is mentioned, sheds light on the social, economic and historical background of the ongoing Arab Revolt and reveals the possibilities for the future. Achcar provides in-depth and invaluable insight into why liberals and the left failed to capitalize on the initial momentum, and assesses whether Islamist parties will be successful in overcoming their country's current crisis.
It is easy to watch the events of the Arab Spring as they continue to spread and get excited about some of the developments, just to feel the enthusiasm brought about by new changes and transformations. While it is important not to ignore the grim data, Achcar is right to insist that we are still in the early stages and there are many different avenues still open. What he said about Libya applies to the entire region: "The game is not over yet."
