Memory, History, Forgetting is a "big" book, focused on the "big" issues of philosophy and humanity, not only a philosophical but also a "wise" book. Philosopher Paul Ricoeur addresses three closely related issues with three different methods: In the first part, a meticulous phenomenology examining the issue of "memory" based on basic philosophical texts; in the second, an "epistemological" reflection on the method and conditions of possibility of the "science" of history, carried out in dialogue with important historians; In the third part, there is a hermeneutic on the relationship between the subject of "forgetting", the dark side of memory and history, and the human condition.
II. Although he survived the concentration camps where he was captured in World War II, Ricoeur never stopped thinking about the meaning of what he witnessed. He draws on Plato's pharmakon (both medicine and medicine) about the remembering and forgetting of the disgraceful moments in the individual and collective history of man, especially in the 20th century. It offers a rich panorama about the political and social uses of remembrance (like poison), as well as melancholy and mourning, and the relationships between forgiveness and forgetting. Meanwhile, he is secretly searching for the secret of an individual and collective "happy memory".
It is a very up-to-date book for societies with "memory problems" like ours, but do not expect a ready-made prescription. Memory, History, Forgetting is a quest, a journey to be embarked on with more philosophers.
