Nusret Polat, whose book titled Erosion of Boundaries - On Modernism and Contemporary Art was published in 2017, reveals a general picture of Western aesthetic culture and philosophy of art in a historical perspective in this work titled Beautiful and Sublime - Aesthetic Culture from Pythagoras to Hegel.
As can be easily understood from the title of the book, in this study the notion of aesthetics is discussed not only as a philosophical thought but also as a cultural phenomenon within a wider network of cultural relations. On the other hand, by directly referencing artists in some sections, Polat also criticizes the abstract approach of books written on aesthetics and philosophy of art, which do not deal with art practice.
The book is a guide written in an understandable language, not only for experts and students on the subject, but also for anyone interested in cultural history, the concept of art, philosophy of art and philosophical aesthetics in general.
