Grizu 2 - Naked and Taxable
Muzaffer Oruçoğlu's four-volume novel series, Grizu, focuses on the development of the working class in Turkey, focusing on coal mines. The volume focuses on a separate historical period. It is also possible to read this work, which we can see as the author's masterpiece, as a kind of documentary novel. But Oruçoğlu does not compromise on the mysterious, crazy, fresh language of the novel in Grizu.
Grizu has a wonderfully detailed field narrative, realism nourished by close observations about mining, and great historical events in the background of the novel, each of which has shaped the recent history of Turkey. Even though he deals with the issues in detail, with his meticulous language and impressive character drawings, he reminds the reader with every line that it is a novel, and a great novel at that. While talking about the bodies of workers and mules, the forced labor of the Western Black Sea peasants, the unimaginable working conditions, and the intertwined persecution practices of capital and law enforcement, he presents to the reader the trust he received from the working class in the form of a "novel". Moreover, he does this by transforming local sayings, professional jargon and terminology into powerful novel material.
9. Grizu, which was deemed worthy of the Abdullah Bastürk Novel Award, appears as one of the highlights of our literature. Reminding the practices that were deemed appropriate for the working class in every period and the response that the working class gave/will give.
