Gözün Vicdanı - Kentin Tasarımı ve Toplumsal Yaşam
In our age, the spaces of the modern Western city filled with people are just places that stage either consumption or tourism, and it is not a coincidence that the city is reduced to such a stage and rendered meaningless. Christianity has caused the distinction between subjective "inner" life and physical "outer" life in Western civilization; When a person turns inward and looks for a shelter, realizing that this shelter he is looking for cannot be his home, he chooses to ignore this distinction and literally escapes from the problem by building "neutral" cities. Since we cannot insist on escape even though we know that it is not a solution, how can we design a city that will allow the integrity of life to be seen clearly? Can we ask contemporary architects and urban designers to design spaces that will, for example, "promote democracy" or "teach the moral dimensions of sexual desire"?
Efforts to separate or integrate the "inside" and "outside" have shaped the Western city from ancient times to the present day; Every movement of thought and art shaped the city of that day. Nowadays, Sennett, who is looking for a way to eliminate this distinction, takes us on an interesting journey through the urbanization history of many cities, especially New York, Paris and Rome, sometimes with an oil painting, sometimes with a poem or the story of obelisks, sometimes with a photograph, sometimes with a philosopher's thought or a composer's work. He takes it out and ends our trip with a ballet. The author, who helps us see our own cities and the cities we have seen so far with a new eye, says that the solution to impersonal cities lies in the richness of difference; "piling up" the differences instead of separating them from each other; It reveals the need to develop designs in which the identity of the city will be determined by the citizens themselves, instead of creating predetermined, unchangeable spaces in cities. If we want differences to create new riches rather than lack of communication, disconnection and alienation in our country, where cities are becoming more and more the same, and cities are rapidly losing their uniqueness as their crowds increase, there is much in this book by Richard Sennett that will attract our attention.
The book of the author, who suggests that urban design should be done as if it were a story, and that cities should be open to new discoveries and surprises, is for everyone who wants to live in a "city like a city"...
