< p>The secret they kept was like a bedbug gnawing the wood from the inside. What appeared from the outside was a majestic, bright and powerful body, but inside, their souls had crumbled to dust.
Richard Papen came to the university with big dreams, fell under the charm of his Ancient Greek professor and his carefully selected students, and somehow managed to get among them. But as he gets inside, he realizes that something dark lies beneath this charm.
A terrible event happens to the young people, who are influenced by ancient Greek philosophy, culture and mythology, during a ritual they perform. They find themselves in a mess where the boundaries of ethics and morality are exceeded, the innocent and the guilty are mixed up, and things can even lead to murder. When they return to the real world, they have a big secret that they have to keep and a burden that they will carry on their shoulders throughout their lives.
“Take the fiction of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, combine it with the story of Euripides' Bakkhalar and Add The Rules of Attraction by Bret Easton Ellis to the background. It is a very powerful work.”
-The New York Times-
“Donna Tartt took not the familiar aspects of youth such as sex, drugs and rock and roll, but the dark and tension-filled side, like in a Greek tragedy. The blood pressure never drops.”
-Newsday-
“This book promises many things to the reader at the same time: psychological tension, a criticism of popular culture and university youth, a philosophical perspective on life…”
- Library Journal-
“An impressive novel that will never be forgotten. Full of references to important figures of literature, it carries that noble
atmosphere of the nineteenth century rather than the twentieth century.”
-The Times-
“A great thriller. It's like a combination of Lord of the Flies and The Rules of Attraction. It's as powerful as a Greek tragedy."
-New York Newsday-
"The most wonderful thing about this novel is that the author has conveyed this complex fiction to us using all his talent. Even a story that makes you uneasy makes you read it with curiosity about the next page.”
-Cosmopolitan-
“Donna Tartt has turned a tense but simple fiction into a unique work by decorating it with the right atmosphere and details from philosophy. She is a great writer.”
-The Washington Post Book World-
“Donna Tartt is a candidate to be the Edgar Allan Poe of her time. Secret History beats like a heart on steroids.”
-Glam-
“A cleverly constructed novel that will make people run from emotion to emotion.”
-Time-
“Tartt is nothing like his contemporary writers. The beautiful language it uses, complex fiction, fascinating characters and intellectual energy
carry this book far ahead of others.”
-The Boston Globe-
“A successful psychological thriller. Absolutely creepy. Tartt is like the master of the lyrical language.”
-The Village Voice-
“A wonderfully constructed book that maintains tension from beginning to end.”
-Vogue-
“A long tale in which friendship, arrogance and murder are cunningly woven together. Tartt's writing leaves us all speechless. It's like a journey back to those school years when we believed that we had the power to reach the divine and that every sin was forgivable.”
-The Philadelphia Inquirer-
“It's fascinating, it takes people by surprise. A writer full of wisdom and talent."
-Vanity Fair-
"A fun, sad, scary novel that you won't want to put down until it's finished. Great success!”
-John Grisham-
“The Secret History begins with idyllic charm and ends exactly where it should be. A less talented writer could never have prepared such an ending. Donna Tartt has written a very impressive and surprising novel.”
-Jay McInerney-
“A great success. The Secret History is a heart-pounding thriller full of intelligence and joy.”
-The Virginian Pilot & Ledger-Star-
“The most beautiful college youth story since John Knowles' A Special Peace. Great.”
-Houston Chronicle-
“Donna Tartt is a very talented writer. The harmony of its sentences and its mystery that fuels the sense of curiosity until the end, despite being so long, surpasses all the books that came out with it. And when the murder comes into play, it truly resembles a Greek tragedy.”
-The Miami Herald-
“I took my breath away while reading it, it's perfect.”
-Ruth Rendell-
“Donna Tartt is such a good writer that he talks about Greek legends and incorporates the analysis of contemporary society into the fiction in an impressive style without the reader noticing. Very clever."
-Sunday Times-
"A mysterious murder, the romantic dreams of confused youth and a look at old and modern traditions... Tartt has managed to keep a great pace in his novel."
-Independent -
“Tartt manages to direct our motivation and expectations to put ourselves in the shoes of the characters so well... It is a great novel.”
-Spectator-
“Tartt tells us that violence is in the most secret places. He dares to show that he can even emerge. Very impressive.”
-The Times Literary Supplement-
“Fascinating and perverse.”
-Elaine Showalter-
“Magnificent. The arrogance of youth, tension, campus habits and Greek references... You won't get enough of reading."
-Evening Standard-
"An excellent success. A powerful book with great pacing. A thought-provoking and impressive novel that develops perfectly under the control of the author.”
