Atatürk was making the following speech in the Turkish Grand National Assembly in 1924;
"Gentlemen! Negative provocations in the country have reached their end.
The Istanbul press and the Progressive Party's propaganda, which uses religion as a tool for politics, encourage the reactionaries who are cowering here and there.
Heavy accusations and slanders are being made against the Republican administration from place to place:
It would be foolish to think that these propagandas will remain ineffective. In my opinion, it is possible that we may encounter a counter-revolution in the near future.
They have thousands of fans. We should not forget that they are waiting for an opportunity... I smell gunpowder and blood."
And then;
The amendment made by the Turkish Grand National Assembly on the "Treason Law" numbered 556 on 25 February 1925 was accepted unanimously. According to this Article;
Article: 1- It is forbidden to establish societies for the purpose of using religion or things considered sacred by religion as a basis or tool for political purposes.
Those who establish or join such societies are considered traitors.
Using religion or things considered sacred by religion as a tool for politics, changing the basic order of the state, disrupting the security of the state, using religion or things considered sacred by religion as an instrument,
Those who act in such a way, either individually or collectively, verbally, in writing, or in action, or through speech or publication, in order to sow discord and division among the people in any way, are also considered traitors.
