Gitanjali – Hymns
Bülent Ecevit, who served as prime minister five times during his intense political life, was also a poet, writer and translator. Ecevit, who was interested in Indian and Eastern philosophy and worked on Sanskrit and Bengali languages, would of course cross paths with Tagore, who shared the troubles of the poor and defended universal human values in his works. Gitanjali was published in Turkish in 1941, and another work of the poet, Avare Kuşlar, was published in Turkish with his translation in 1943. Tagore, who personally translated Gitanjali into English, announced his poem to the world in his own words. We are re-presenting the work, which brought the Nobel Prize to its creator, in poet Ecevit's Turkish version, more than 70 years later.
