The originality of Michel Tournier's works is based on forgotten myths and old stories. He tries to comprehend the complex real world through both realistic and fantastic works that give new life to myths. Tournier also sees the myth as a call to chaos that disrupts the established order. "A myth that has lost its vitality is called an allegory. The function of the writer is to prevent myths from turning into allegory," says Tournier. His novels based on myths come at the right time; It emerged on the literary scene at a time when the reader was tired of nouveau roman, which lacked traditional novel elements such as character analysis, plot, and dramatic structure. Turning his back on the modern world, Tournier turned to old stories and began to tell them from a brand new perspective. In this novel, in which he brings his personal interpretation to the fate of Jeanne D'Arc and her comrade-in-arms Gilles de Rais, who say that they were assigned by God to save the Kingdom of France, Tournier conveys to us a myth of "duality" by concentrating on the concepts of "double, twinship". . He draws a parallel between the fates of two opposing figures, an angel and a devil.
