Twelve-year-old Julian Collien, who lives in the Ruhr region of Germany, is left at home with his miner father because his mother and sister are on holiday because they don't have enough money. Always a bit outside of the events, always a spectator, silently enduring what happens to him, Julian gets to know sex and death during the long summer days he spends with his neighbors' stepdaughter Marusha, his friends in the "animal club", the crazy old Pomrehn, his grandfather Jupp, the undertaker, and others. The hot, lazy summer weeks lead to a disaster that Julian, sometimes a prisoner of his own imagination, thinks he has caused. With his sharp observational power and delicate description of details, Rothmann creates a magical atmosphere with a poetic language, departing from the ordinary events and details of daily life.
