Country of the Future
As soon as I set foot in Rio, I realized that nothing in my life had ever affected me so strongly before. I was amazed and shocked at the same time. Because what was waiting for me here was not only a unique view consisting of sea, mountains, city and tropical nature, but also a very different kind of civilization that I had never known before.
S. Zweig
During his long journeys in Brazil, where Stefan Zweig came to give conferences in 1936 and stayed for weeks, he got to know the untouched forests of this fifth largest country in the world, the regions untouched by human foot, the Amazon region, its unique nature, big cities, and the tolerant and warm people he encountered wherever he went. He collected all his impressions in Brazil – Land of the Future, which is considered one of his last books. We see in the sincerity of his narrative that Zweig fell in love with this South American country, its nature and its people. Even though millions of people of very different origins lived in endless lands, Zweig was immediately fascinated by the Brazilian's joy of life, inner peace, and ability to get along quickly and smoothly with every stranger. Among the countless countries he visited, the country that excited the humanist-minded, cosmopolitan writer the most was Brazil. It is impossible not to see his enthusiasm in this work. On the brink of World War II, when the Nazis were gaining strength and Europe was beginning to collapse on its own, Brazil, an extraordinary country in every way, seemed like a paradise to him.
