The Grapes of Wrath , which is arguably John Steinbeck 's greatest work and earned him the Pulitzer Prize, had a shocking effect and caused great controversy when it was first published in 1939. In this epic novel, which tells about the struggle to survive of the masses who were impoverished and dispossessed due to the capitalistization of agriculture and crises during the "Great Depression" that affected the whole world, Steinbeck focuses on one of the thousands of worker families who had to leave their homes and hit the roads due to hunger, misery and tyranny.
The Grapes of Wrath, which expresses in a striking way the resilience and dignity of humanity amidst failed hopes and joys that turn into sadness, and criticizes capitalism to the core, is one of the most important works of the 20th century.
