Street of the Strange
Two people who are caught up in the desire to find happiness, who share their longings for the past, who live what they could not live or at least hope to live. Their only crime is being human, the desire to love and be loved…
In Garipler Sokağı, set during the Second World War, the master writer of Turkish literature, Oktay Akbal, tells the daily lives of a neighborhood where the poor and needy people live, their anxieties and their efforts to hold on to life through the eyes of Salih, a university student who settles there.
In a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city where apartment buildings are rapidly being plundered, life is very active; noise, fights, songs and folk songs are always present. Children's voices mix with the women's songs. The young girls of the neighborhood do all sorts of things to get away from here; the young men seem to have gotten used to the order. One day, suddenly he receives news: The street is going to be expropriated.
Salih, who witnessed the last days before the expropriation, starts to love this street that he thinks he doesn’t belong on and it is time to leave.
While the poor are leaving the street one by one because apartment buildings are going to be built in their place, Salih, with his suitcase in his hand, runs away from where he entered like a thief without looking back.
