Freud-Spinoza Correspondence 1676-1938
If Spinoza had read Freud, which concepts would he adopt and which would he criticise? What did “unconscious”, “death drive”, “Oedipus complex” mean to him? So why might Freud not have read Spinoza carefully? What would he think of conatus if he read it? How would he approach the theory of emotion and affect expressed in the Ethics ?
We are faced with an extraordinary book: In order to answer these and similar questions, Michel Juffé wanted to make the texts of two thinkers, who are almost two centuries apart, one considered primarily a philosopher (but also a philosopher considered the pioneer of psychology) and the other the founder of psychoanalysis, "talk" to each other; In other words, he "corresponded" Spinoza and Freud in order to determine the common points of these two thinkers as well as the points where they differ, and to reveal the criticisms they would bring to each other's thoughts. From this "encounter", a thorough review was born that our readers interested in philosophy and psychoanalysis will enjoy reading.
