French Trilogy
Marx's three books on class struggles in France were collected in one book, titled The French Trilogy; As a hard cover…
The French Trilogy brings together three of Karl Marx's fundamental works about class struggles in France: Class Struggles in France 1848-1850, which analyzes the developments after the February 1848 Revolution, and Louis Bonaparte's 18 Brumaire and the experience of the 1871 Paris Commune. Civil War in France. Also included in the book are the first and second drafts of The Civil War in France.
In the February 1848 Revolution in France, the working class emerged on the political scene as a separate class for the first time, ensured the declaration of the republic and fought for this republic to become a "social" republic. The response of the ruling classes was to force the working class into an early uprising, committing a massacre in June of the same year. It was seen that the "bourgeois republic" could in fact be nothing other than a "bourgeois dictatorship". In Class Struggles in France, the illusions of the working class about the capitalist order and its political institutions are analyzed and the lessons to be learned from the defeats are described. Engels' comprehensive Introduction dated 1895 is included in its entirety, including passages that he unintentionally omitted due to the impositions of the social democratic party leaders in Germany at the time.
Louis Bonaparte, who was elected president by the votes of the majority of the people in December 1848, carried out a coup d'etat in December 1851, ending the Second Republic period in France. While the conditions that made it possible for an ordinary and ridiculous adventurer to play the role of hero are analyzed in 18 Brumaire, it is also revealed how the policies of bourgeois republicans and petty bourgeois republicans led to Louis Bonaparte being able to declare himself emperor in December 1852.
Louis Bonaparte was captured in the war against Prussia in 1870, a republic was declared in the country, a "national defense" government was established by bourgeois politicians, and Paris was besieged by the Prussians. The people, who resisted the government that quickly turned into a "treason" government and made efforts to surrender the capital to Prussia, took the administration of Paris into their own hands on March 18, 1871. In the Civil War in France, the conditions that brought about the first working class power in history, that is, the Paris Commune, the political and social measures of the Commune and the reasons for its collapse are analyzed.
The drafts of The Civil War in France, on the other hand, are informative about the process of the creation of the work, as well as containing Marx's more comprehensive evaluations of some of the results that he summarizes in the final text.
