A Thesis on the Art of Sorting Beans Book Description: The unnamed musician protagonist of the novel A Thesis on the Art of Sorting Beans by Myśliwski, one of the leading names of contemporary Polish literature, takes stock of his life in a monologue with his mysterious guest. In this monologue, which continues throughout the bean sorting event held in a single day, he tells about the traumatic times he experienced during the war, his youthful delusions, his passions, his years of "learning and migrating from place to place", his fight for bread abroad and his eventual return home. "Common sense is all well and good... But what is it really? It's what you say when you don't know what else to say." In A Thesis on the Art of Sorting Beans, which can be described as a kind of "philosophical comedy" that reflects on the role of fate and fortune in human life and internalizes pain, sorrow, laughter, hope and dreams, Myśliwski's mastery demonstrates the not at all sullen nature of philosophy rather than looking for easy solutions or consolations. It manifests itself in his ability to make fun of mysteries and to list the most vital questions, many of which he is aware of not being able to find answers to, in a revealing language. As you know, people shucking beans under the sun and chatting about different topics was a form of neighborly relations. These conversations were about daily events, old times, dreams, ghosts, the present and the next world, God, individual and collective experiences; people pretended to be wise, they philosophized, in short, there were no boundaries, words took people in every direction. Everyone would participate in this protest: women, men, old and young people, even children. I sometimes think that maybe beans are grown in large quantities just for this purpose, because I can't remember eating so many beans. And remembering this tradition from my childhood, I started thinking about how to transform its verbal structure into the structure of writing a book.
