Ezra Pound
Confucius fan, peace activist, traitor, fascist and poet... Or is he mentally ill? It is impossible to remain indifferent to the controversial personality of Ezra Pound, one of the most influential poets of modernism. Among the poets and writers he supports with his generous editorial contributions are giant names such as Joyce and Eliot. If it weren't for Pound, modernism might not have had such an impact on literature. Alec Marsh says, "Poets think with their poems; poetry is also a way of thinking about history and the world." In this book, he discusses Pound's writings, letters, poems and his masterpiece, the Cantos, as examples of this way of thinking.
It makes Pound's sometimes dark work, as well as his often anger-provoking views, political attitude and personality, "understandable" for us. Time condemned Pound's politics, and with him went much of the poetry. This is not primarily because his poetry fails, but because readers are less eager to understand Pound because they are afraid of what they will find.
