Yazidis - Yazidism as an Ethnoreligious Belief
Yazidis are known as "Devil worshipers" by their Muslim and Christian neighbors. Moreover, this cliché is now accepted as academic data, beyond being a general opinion, and is repeated by most academics working on Yazidism. However, in Yazidism, where evil is cursed and there are no beings such as Satan or the god/goddess of evil, the concept of goodness, framed by Melek Tavus, is the most important virtue.
Yazidism is a syncretic religion influenced by ancient Indo-Iranian religions - especially Zoroastrianism - and heretic and heterodox traditions in Semitic religions. However, circles that misinterpret this syncretic existence consider Yazidism as a religion that has nothing original and is just the sum of other beliefs. This reductionist attitude ignores the uniqueness of religions with syncretic features such as Yazidism. This reductionist attitude can only be overcome with an anthropological approach. This book has been prepared from an anthropological perspective and with data obtained as a result of field research spanning years. The author's aim is not to talk about the Yazidis' beliefs and identities despite them, but to try to understand the Yazidis and Yazidism within their own world of meaning.
