Aesthetics and Politics
The debate about modernism and realism that began between Ernst Bloch and Georg Lukacs in the 1930s became one of the guides of 20th century aesthetics. The collection Aesthetics and Politics brings together the key texts of this debate, in which these two philosophers, as well as Walter Benjamin, Theodor W. Adorno and Bertolt Brecht, participated. These texts constitute a fundamental source in terms of elucidating some of the basic concepts of aesthetics: "Autonomy and sociality of art", "popular art and elitism", "form-content"... The conflict between modernism and realism arises on the eve of the Second World War and ends in the Cold War. It lasts until the pain subsides. It forms the aesthetic front of the intense political, social and cultural struggles of this period. Fredric Jameson's "Epilogue" is a review in this context. Today, art is losing its autonomy as a result of its privatization, financialization, industrialization and fusion with communication technologies. Therefore, it is of vital importance that it maintains its political power. There is also an eclipse of contemporary realism. In other words, the conflict between modernism and realism is not considered over. For him, Aesthetics and Politics discussions still guide the way.
