The operation launched by the British army into Ottoman territory with the occupation of Basra in 1914 continued with the advance of the 6th Indian Division under the command of Major General Charles VF Townshend to Baghdad in 1915. William C. Spackman, who served as the doctor of the 48th Combat Engineering Battalion of this division during the same period, records the Mesopotamia operation day by day until June 29, 1916, when the British army was surrounded by Halil Pasha in Kutulamare and surrendered. After this date, he spent a year in Baghdad and Mosul as a prisoner of war, responsible for taking care of sick and wounded prisoners captured by the Ottoman army. Since he has freedom of movement due to his duty, he has the opportunity to observe the life and local people in the region in detail. He approaches like a traveler and writes down the new places and people he sees in a colorful style. In his notes, he also describes his experiences from the Kedos (Gediz) prison camp in Anatolia, to which he was sent towards the end of the war, until his return to England. Dr. With the memories Spackman gathered years later, based on the diaries and notes he kept during this period, he tells the reader a different face of the war, sometimes with a humorous language, despite the horrors and tragedies of the war. Apart from the official military records about Kütülamare, Kütülamare Memoirs of a Captive British Doctor, which is one of the few works that deals with the events behind the front, sheds light on the lesser-known aspects of the Great War.
