There are various structural and constructed barriers that are ignored, making it difficult to discuss the Armenian genocide in Turkey. Silence, denial and assimilation can be pronounced as generic names of these obstacles. Taner Akçam discusses these obstacles with various examples in his articles collected in The Forced Islamization of Armenians. In the first article in the book, Akçam analyzes why and how he became interested in the Armenian genocide issue, the reactions he encountered, and what happened regarding this issue in the past thirty years, through his personal story. The second article deals with the debate that started with Sarkis Torosyan's memoirs and continues on various aspects. The last and comprehensive article in the compilation is based on a new research completed by Akçam: Forced assimilation of Armenians... Akçam explains that forced assimilation was done in at least four ways: Forced Islamization, temporary settlement, rounding up of children and distributing them to Muslim homes, and the removal of young women and girls. Assimilation by being alienated from their families and forced to marry. Akçam argues that forced assimilation was an integral part, a structural element of the Armenian genocide, and focuses on why this dimension has been neglected until today. The book opens up an important area that must be addressed in discussions on the Armenian genocide. Forced Islamization of Armenians suggests finding ways of real confrontation instead of remaining silent and rejecting.
