Epikharmos Fragmanlar
Back Cover Text (From the Promotional Bulletin)
Epikharmos, one of the most important names of early Greek literature, is a master of satire who satirizes mythological heroes and ordinary people. He was born in Kos as the son of a physician father who was a descendant of the Asclepius family, but the place where he developed and flourished, reached his maturity, produced his works, and even died and was buried was the fertile lands of Sicily. Even though he grew up with the medical training he received from his father, he is not very keen on this profession. His youth was mostly shaped by the Pythagorean environment, and according to a rumor, he became a student of Pythagoras himself and tried to equip his mind with philosophy.
Later, he came and settled in the city of Syracuse and found a place in the palace of Hieron, the ruler of this city who was fond of art and literature. Here he crosses paths with many poets, from lyric poets such as Simonides, Pindar and Bakchylides to tragic poets such as Aeschylus and poet/philosophers such as Xenophanes. Here, his mind, equipped with philosophy, is literally released from its container, and verses woven with philosophical and moral aphorisms and satires begin to flow from his pen, one after the other.
These works would crown him as the "inventor of comedy" even in ancient times. Aristotle would initiate comedy style poetry with him, Plato would mention his name with Homer and quote him whenever necessary, and even the great comedy poets of antiquity, from the Athenian Crates to the Roman Plautus, would emulate him.
