Enkheiridion-Hasan Ali Yücel Classics
Epictetus (approximately AD 50-125/130): One of the most important and famous philosophers of the Roman Empire period. He probably came to Rome as a child and became the slave of the free Epaphroditus, who was also once a slave. Epictetus attended the lectures of Musonius Rufus, the greatest Stoic teacher of the period, and followed his thoughts. After being freed from slavery, he left Rome due to the decision to exile philosophers during the reign of Emperor Domitian and founded his school in Nicopolis in Northern Greece. Many noble Romans became his students, and one of them, Lucius Flavius Arrianus, collected what he learned from Epictetus, who did not write down his teachings like Socrates, in two separate texts called Diatribai and Enkheiridion and made it available to the present day. In Diatribai, the basic elements of Stoic ethics are discussed comprehensively, while the shorter Enkheiridion is considered a summary of it that can be used as a "guide", as in its dictionary meaning.
