Criticism and Truth
Sur Racine (On Racine), written by Barthes in 1965, causes great controversy in the field of literary criticism. With this book, he hits the target of traditional theorists such as Raymond Picard; Newspapers and culture-art-literature supplements are filled with articles crucifying Barthes. Criticism and Truth, which Barthes wrote in 1966 in response to this debate, is a fundamental objection to the verisimilitude described as the classical critical approach and the conservatism of the criteria of objectivity, taste and intelligibility that fix this similarity. Barthes' text, which argues that "the freedom and limits of a symbolic criticism should be discussed", is considered by many to be the manifesto of the New Criticism. Criticism and Truth is one of the most important works of Barthes, who proposes a text-oriented reading of literary works and argues that criticism can only reveal creative productivity from this perspective.
