What is Criticism? - Culture of Self
The present edition brings together two lectures by Michel Foucault. Foucault gave his first lecture at the Sorbonne on May 27, 1978, in front of the French Philosophical Society, and the speech was given under his supervision in 1990, titled "What is Criticism?" It was published under the title. His other lecture was presented under the title "Culture of the Self" at the University of California, Berkeley, on April 12, 1983. Although Foucault's thought underwent a significant evolution between 1978 and 1984, which separated the two conferences, Kant's Was ist Aufklärung? His reference to the text ("What is Enlightenment?") occupies a central place in all the texts he wrote and in all the speeches he gave during this period; for the purpose of his repeated treatment of this text on the Enlightenment is to explain why he is interested in the theme of the "culture of the self" as a philosophical and historical question. Thus, in the book "What is Criticism?" and the conferences titled "Culture of the Self" and the discussions that accompany them, both enable us to follow Foucault's intellectual evolution and provide the opportunity to see how he read Was ist Aufklärung? in different ways.
