Critical Fragments-Philosophical Aphorisms
On January 22, 1798, Wilhelm Schlegel wrote a letter from Jena to Schleiermacher, who shared a small house in Berlin with his brother Friedrich Schlegel, reproaching him for the scandals created by his brother, and from Berlin, where he had recently moved, to join him in Jena. He asks him to persuade Friedrich to return; because his brother caused a complete dust-up with the last text he published after his quarrel with Schiller. So much so that even Wilhelm was on the verge of being discarded because he shared the same surname.
Finally, Goethe joins the discussion and has a fatherly conversation with Friedrich, politely asking him to work on another field, somewhere else, from now on. However, when Friedrich went to Berlin upon this advice, he already established his own circle and took on the role of pioneer of a new literary movement.
This text, which was written by a 25-year-old young man and created such a great impact and was the pioneer of a brand new and completely original intellectual movement, was Critical Fragments and consisted of 127 aphorisms in only 37 pages. Hundreds of books would be written on Critical Fragments over the almost two hundred years that passed. Schlegel would be called a loudmouth by some, a genius by others, but in any case, he would take his place on the stage of history as the intellectual foundation of the Romantic movement...
